Homophones

Their = belonging to them

They’re = they are

There = not here

Your = belonging to you

You’re = you are

Whether = if

Weather = rain etc

It’s = it is

Its = belonging to it

Which = relating to a specific one

Witch = worker of magic

Discreet = secretive, subtle

Discrete = finite, or fixed size

Effect = (noun)  The effect is...

Affect = (verb)  Names affect us ...

These are the awkward pairs and groups of words that sound the same but are spelt differently.  You probably learnt to tell the difference in primary school.  Or perhaps not, as many of these errors were not corrected or marked wrong in your work previously.  If you do have a problem with these, it’s best to practise using the right one by forming sentences with them in.  It feels a bit babyish, but it shouldn’t take you many sentences or recitations of which is which before you’ve got it sussed.  It’s just not worth losing marks over.
